    Seabird and incidental cetacean and seal sightings were recorded during daylight hours during the entire voyage. During the voyage, there was 2,581 transect counts of seabirds of 61 species. Coverage was good over the area around Heard and McDonald islands, with some coverage also of Gunnari Ridge. Also covered some deeper parts of the Central Kerguelen Plateau. There were 31 sightings of sea mammals away from the immediate vicinity of Heard and McDonald islands (fur seals were sufficiently common in waters around Heard and McDonald Island to be treated using the same method as for seabirds). Sightings included five species of whales and three species of dolphins. The most intriguing series of sightings comprised seven sightings (approximately eight animals) of blue whales over Gunnari Ridge on 9/10 February (another sighting on 21 January may have been in the same area, as it was approximately 1° north and 1° west of the February sightings) The data has been published to the Ocean Biodiversity Information System (OBIS https://obis.org).

  • This record describes sub bottom profiler data collected on RV Investigator voyage IN2016_V01,'HEOBI: Heard Earth-Ocean-Biosphere Interactions' which departed Fremantle on the 8th January 2016 and returned to Hobart on the 27th February 2016. The Kongsberg SBP120 (sub bottom profiler) was used to acquire data containing the specular reflections at different sediment interfaces below the seafloor. The SBP120 provides a 3° by 3° angular resolution. The echosounder's frequency sweep range is from 2.5 to 7 kHz. The SBP120 was logged continuously for the extent of the voyage. Data are stored in *.raw (280 files 39.2 GB) raw and *.seg (280 files 38.9 GB) segy formats at CSIRO. The segy format data had a real time processing stream applied, which applies gain, a gain correction, matched filter with replica shaping, an attribute calculation for instantaneous amplitude and time variable gain.   • This record describes XBT data collected on RV Investigator voyage IN2016_V01, 'HEOBI: Heard Earth-Ocean-Biosphere Interactions' which departed Fremantle, and arrived Hobart 8th January - 27th February 2016. A total of 8 XBT casts were conducted over the duration of this voyage. Data are stored in netCDF files at the CSIRO.   • This record describes gravity data collected on RV Investigator voyage IN2016_V01, 'HEOBI: Heard Earth-Ocean-Biosphere Interactions' which departed Fremantle on the 8th January 2016 and returned to Hobart on the 27th February 2016. The gravity meter instrument is a MicroG Lacoste Air-Sea II. Data are stored in .ENV and .DAT data files at CSIRO. There are 100 files totalling 808 MB of raw data in this dataset. Wharf tie was undertaken at Fremantle using a Scintrex Autograv CG-5. Wharf tie data can be found in Fremantle wharf tie 22 Dec 2015.TXT, which is stored with the raw data.   • This record describes multibeam echosounder data collected on RV Investigator voyage IN2016_V01, 'HEOBI: Heard Earth-Ocean-Biosphere interactions' which departed Fremantle on the 8th January 2016 and returned to Hobart on the 27th February 2016. The Kongsberg EM122 multibeam echosounder was used to acquire seafloor bathymetry, backscatter information and watercolumn backscatter around Heard and Macdonald islands and between Fremantle and Hobart. The EM122 provides a 1 degree by 1 degree angular resolution. The echosounder's nominal frequency is 12 kHz. Data are stored in *.all raw format for bathymetry and backscatter and in *.wcd format for watercolumn backscatter at the CSIRO. There are 1006 files totalling 22.8 GB of raw data in this dataset. Sound velocity profiles were applied to this data during data acquisition. Bathymetry data contained in *.all format is corrected for motion and position. Tide corrections were not applied to the processed data. Processed data had outliers removed. Processed line data are available in *.gsf and ascii format and processed bathymetry and backscatter grids in geotiff format. Additional information regarding this dataset, including information on processing streams, is contained in the GSM data acquisition and processing report.   • This record describes scientific split-beam echosounder data collected on the RV Investigator voyage IN2016_V01, 'HEOBI: Heard Earth-Ocean-Biosphere Interactions' which departed Fremantle on the 8th January 2016 and returned to Hobart on the 27th February 2016. The Simrad EK60 split beam echosounder's 12, 18, 38, 70 120, 200 and 333 kHz frequency bands were used to acquire acoustic backscatter data around Heard and Macdonald Islands and between Fremantle and Hobart. All frequencies were logged continuously for the extent of the voyage. The frequencies were set to passive during the voyage. Data are stored in *.raw, *.bot and *.idx format at CSIRO. There are 2147 files totalling 175 GB of raw data in this dataset. No processing has been conducted on this data. The EM710 provides a 0.5° by 1° transmit and receive angular resolution respectively. The echosounder's nominal frequency range is from 70 to 100 kHz. Data are stored in *.all raw format for bathymetry and backscatter and in *.wcd format for watercolumn backscatter at the CSIRO. There are 923 files totalling 58.3 GB of raw data in this dataset. Sound velocity profiles were applied to this data during data acquisition. Bathymetry data contained in *.all format is corrected for motion and position. Tide corrections were not applied to the processed data. Processed data had outliers removed. Processed line data is available in *.gsf and ascii format and processed bathymetry and backscatter grids in geotiff format.   • This record describes ME 70 scientific multibeam echosounder data collected on RV Investigator voyage IN2016_V01, 'HEOBI: Heard Earth-Ocean-Biosphere Interactions' which departed Fremantle on the 8th January 2016 and returned to Hobart on the 27th February 2016. The Simrad ME70 scientific multibeam echosounder acquired acoustic backscatter data through the water column. The echosounder's frequency range is from 70 kHz to 120 kHz. The ME70 logged continuously for the extent of the voyage. Data are stored in Simrad *.all raw format at CSIRO. There are 2098 files totalling 203 GB of raw data in this dataset.   • This record describes the Iron(II) data collected from the Marine National Facility RV Investigator voyage IN2016_V01 titled: "HEOBI: Heard Earth-Ocean-Biosphere Interactions." The voyage took place from Fremantle (WA) to Hobart (TAS) between January 7 and February 27, 2016. This dataset was produced as part of the project "Heard Earth-Ocean-Biosphere Interactions (HEOBI), GEOTRACES process study GIpr05." Samples were analysed using Flow Injection Analysis – Chemiluminescence (FIA-CL) method on-board during the voyage. Voyage, date, time, latitude, longitude, sampling site (TMR), bottle numbers and depths are included. The collected data were subsequently archived within the CSIRO Oceans and Atmosphere (O&A) Information and Data Centre (IDC) in Hobart. Additional information regarding this dataset may be contained in the Voyage Summary and the CTD Data Processing Report.

This dataset was processed and then archived within the CSIRO Oceans and Atmosphere (O&A) Information and Data Centre (IDC) in Hobart.
